Let's go through the passage and determine the correct tense forms for each verb based on the context:

  1. I once knew a village teacher who was partially blind. He was deprived of one eye as the result of infection. His blind eye had been taken out, and a glass one was inserted in its socket instead. One day the teacher needed to leave his class of small children alone for half an hour or so. But he was held back by one consideration. The children of the class were really unruly. He knew that if they were left alone for any length of time they would become violent and complaints would be made by their parents.

Suddenly he was struck by an idea. In a moment his glass eye was taken out of its socket, and was placed on the table.

“Now, children,” he said, “I am going out for a few minutes but you will be observed all the time by my eye. If anything is done which is not approved by me it will be seen by my eye, and the child will be punished when I return.

The children were impressed very much, and the teacher went off.

But when he returned an hour later it seemed that a hurricane had passed through the classroom. The teacher was astounded. “Evidently,” he thought, “I have been outwitted. I wonder how”.

In the classroom the tables were overturned, the walls were spattered with ink from ink-bombs which had been thrown during the battle which still was being fought out as a manifestation of high spirits. In fact, a good time had been had by all.

The teacher wondered why the presence of his glass eye had not been respected. He looked round for it and saw that it was covered by a hat.

In this passage, the narrative mainly uses the past simple tense to describe the sequence of events, while the past perfect tense is used to describe actions that were completed before another action in the past. The future forms are used in the context of reported speech to express future actions from the past perspective.

I once knew a village teacher who was partially blind. He had been deprived of one eye as a result of infection, and his blind eye had been taken out and replaced with a glass one. One day, the teacher needed to leave his class of small children alone for a short period of time, but he was hesitant because the children were unruly. He knew that if they were left alone, they would become violent and their parents would complain.

Suddenly, he was struck by an idea. He removed his glass eye from its socket and placed it on the table.

"Now, children," he said, "I am going out for a few minutes, but you will be watched the whole time by my eye. If anything is done that I do not approve of, it will be seen by my eye, and the child will be punished when I return."

The children were very impressed, and the teacher left. However, when he returned an hour later, it seemed as though a hurricane had passed through the classroom. The teacher was astounded. "Evidently," he thought, "I have been outwitted. I wonder how."

The tables were overturned, the walls were spattered with ink from ink bombs that had been thrown during the battle that was still being fought out as a display of high spirits. In fact, everyone had a good time.

The teacher wondered why his glass eye had not been respected. He looked around for it and saw that it was covered by a hat.
